Ernst Toch Archive

Ernst Toch, né le 7 décembre 1887 à Vienne, a mené sa vie de compositeur en autodidacte dès son enfance, sans l'appui d'un environnement familial musicien ou de personnalités marquantes de l'enseignement. Il a commencé par des quatuors à cordes et des pièces pour piano d'un caractère romantique tardif (Stammbuchverse pour piano, 1905; Sixième quatuor à cordes op. 12, 1905). Sa Symphonie de chambre en fa majeur (1906) lui apporte en 1909 le prix Mozart de la ville de Francfort-sur-le-Main, qui, donnant droit à une bourse et à une année d'études à l'école de musique Hoch, donne à l'étudiant en médecine l'impulsion nécéssaire pour se destiner uniquement à la musique. Après un bref passage chez Willi Rehberg (piano) et Iwan Knorr (composition), il reçoit en 1913 la charge d'un cours de piano et de composition à la haute école de musique de Mannheim. En 1910, il est honoré du prix Mendelssohn et, de 1910 à 1913, il reçoit quatre fois le prix de l'Etat autrichien pour la musique. En 1914, il sert dans l'armée autrichienne. Lors d'une permission en 1916, il épouse la fille d'un banquier, Lilly Zwack.

Avec le Neuvième quatuor à cordes op. 26 (1919), une nouvelle période stylistique commence: connu jusque-là pour la pratique de la tonalité élargie et pour une polyphonie artistement menée, il touche plus tard aussi à l'expérimentation technique: musique radiophonique avec Paul Hindemith, musique utile (Fuge aus der Geographie pour choeur parlé, 1930). En 1921, il est diplômé à l'université de Heidelberg avec une contribution à la stylistique de la mélodie. Dès 1922, Toch est régulièrement représenté à Donaueschingen: en 1926, par exemple, avec les Trois pièces pour piano Velte-Mignon, pièce de commande des Journées musicales de Donaueschingen. Les années 20 sont pour Toch les plus riches en succès: un contrat d'une décennie avec les éditions Schott lui permet de concrétiser ses idées musicales en paix et avec une relative sécurité financière. Naissent alors les pièces pour piano Burlesques (1923), les Cinq capricetti (1925) ainsi que la pièce la plus significative de cette phase, le Concerto pour piano et orchestre op. 38 (1926), avec lequel Toch est invité en 1932 pour sa première grande tournée aux Etats-Unis. En 1928, Toch déménage à Berlin avec sa famille. Il y écrit quelques pièces de scène mineures comme Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse (Hans Christian Andersen, 1927) et Egon und Emilie (Christian Morgenstern, 1928) ainsi que le capriccio d'opéras en trois actes Der Fächer (Ferdinand Lion, 1930).

Toch connaît une interruption de son travail en 1933: il fuit la dictature nazie aux Etats-Unis, passant par la France et par l'Angleterre, où il compose en 1935 les Variations Big Ben pour orchestre. Le compositeur commence à construire son existence d'exilé en 1935 avec des musiques de films pour Hollywood. Sa terre d'accueil est la Californie. Il y enseigne la composition et la philosophie à l'Université de Californie du Sud. La pièce la plus importante qu'il laisse en ce temps-là est The Shaping Forces In Music (New York 1948, troisième édition en 1977). Après 1950, naissent sept grandes symphonies, parmi lesquelles la troisième (1954) est récompensée par le prix Pulitzer en 1957. En 1960, Ernst Toch reçoit un Grammy Award. Parce que son nouveau langage musical, constitué dans les années 1920, n'a pas reçu l'audience escomptée aux Etats-Unis, l'artiste revient dans ses dernières années au langage lyrico-romantique de ses premières oeuvres. Le premier octobre 1964, Ernst Toch meurt d'un cancer à Los Angeles.
