Compositions Van Lier sont
caractérisés par un idiome très personnel, qui est exprimée par polyphoniques
lignes et une pièce de théâtre avec le rythme et mètre. Son discours inaugural
de sa nomination comme maître de conférences à l'Université de Groningen (1966)
était donc en droit rythme et du mètre . Si il y aurait eu un effet, ce
qui est particulièrement Johann Sebastian Bach, dont le travail qu'il
connaissait très bien. Cette influence s'est traduite, entre autres, dans Le
Cantique des Cantiques (1948) texte de la Bible : Bach Passion selon saint
Matthieu cite un texte de la chanson de Salomon et Van Lier utilisé cette
citation de Bach.
Van Lier affiche un grand intérêt
dans la voix chantée. Il a composé des chansons (avec le piano , petit ensemble
ou orchestre ) et la musique chorale (a cappella ou avec orchestre). En outre,
il a composé d'autres la musique de chambre, musique de scène , trois
symphonies, un Symphonia (dont il n'a pas '4 Symphony "ci-dessus), un
facile Divertimento («facile» ici se réfère à l'accessibilité au public,
mais pas les artistes interprètes ou exécutants) et Intrada reale e sinfonia
festiva , musique de scène pour la visite de la reine Juliana de
l'anniversaire de 350 ans de l'Université de Groningen (l'événement avec Van
Lier a reçu son doctorat honoris causa).
Son travail est également une
période au début et plus tard de reconnaître: De Liers compositions
d'après-guerre sont intériorisées et prévoient souvent un mystique composant
