Biographical Note

James Simon was born in 1880 in Berlin. He studied music in Berlin and Munich and is regarded as a "lost" late romantic composer. In 1933 he emigrated via Switzerland to Amsterdam, where he stayed until his deportation in 1941 to Theresienstadt. He was killed in Auschwitz in 1944.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is primarily made up of the unpublished musical compositions of James Simon. There is one folder of biographical information.

The compositions were apparently sent to Toni Appelbaum / Apel, who emigrated from Berlin to the United States with her husband and daughter in 1937. Virtually all the compositions are affectionately and intimately inscribed to Toni. Folder one contains several postcards from Simon to Toni, Simon's obituary, several photographs, and a program advertising his work.
